Newport News, Virginia doesn't see very much snow. So when it snows there, everyone gets excited. And no one knows how to drive in it. I didn't have much in the way of snow gear when I've hiked in some of the deeper snows we got when we were younger. But I was determined to go walking in snow that was deeper than my boots anyway.
Now, I'm not a fool. I know that walking in snow over my boots would have been a very quick and painful end to what had the potential to be a great hike. So I took saran wrap and wrapped it around my boots, and up the legs of my jeans. I basically created makeshift gaiters. I have my own pair of gaiters now, but this was effective for what it was. Snow did not get inside my boots. It was still snowing when I went out to explore, but that was part of the charm.
I love the sound snow makes when you walk on it, and how quiet everything seems to get while it's snowing. There's this surreal feeling when walking around during a snow storm that I love.
If you're ever worried about your feet getting wet while walking in the snow, try saran wrap on waterproof boots. It worked fantastically well.
